Three days: city, history and sea

Three days is a good amount of time for Dublin. The first two belong to the city itself, and the third takes you out on the DART to Howth, where Dublin shows how close its big-city core and dramatic coastline really are. All times are guidelines and leave room for breaks.

Day 1 - City centre and Georgian Dublin

The first day pairs Trinity College with the museum quarter of Georgian Dublin: start at the National Gallery, then the colourful doors around Merrion Square. After a lunch break, continue to Dublin Castle and the Chester Beatty Library, and finish the evening in Temple Bar.

Day 2 - Kilmainham, the Liberties and Guinness

The second day starts with a booked tour of Kilmainham Gaol and works its way back through the Liberties: St Patrick's Cathedral, Marsh's Library and Christ Church. The Guinness Storehouse rounds off the day, since it stays open latest in the evening and the Gravity Bar is at its best then.

Day 3 - Howth

The third day belongs to the coast: the harbour and Ireland's Eye, the Cliff Walk around the peninsula, fish and chips by the pier, and Howth Castle. Is 3 days enough for Dublin?+
Yes, three days works well - two full days for the city and one day for the coast. If you also want to see Malahide Castle or Glasnevin, plan for a fourth day.
Howth or Malahide for the day trip?+
Howth offers the more spectacular mix of clifftop walking, harbour and fish restaurants. Malahide has the edge with its castle and makes a quieter alternative; both are reached by DART.
Which ticket for the DART to Howth?+
The Leap Card is the simplest option: it covers DART, bus and Luas and caps your daily fare. A single day-return ticket to Howth is also available from the ticket machines.
Is a sightseeing pass worth it for 3 days?+
